The first ever edition of Dominique Ansel’s new tasting menu U.P. launched on July 17 and lucky guests of the Cronut master were treated to eight courses of over-the-top, inventive desserts and cocktails. The theme of the evening was “first memories last forever” and the entire menu evoked firsts: first kisses, first memories, first jobs etc. To get a sense of the fun creations, the “first kiss” dish was served in bowls meant to evoke men’s and women’s cheeks. There was also a “first jobs” course made of nougat and praline resembling a bar graph.
The 48 tickets for the next weekend available (September 18, 19 and 20) go on sale at noon today. Grab your tickets fast! The last batch sold out in 90 minutes. Didn't snag a ticket? The next batch go on sale next Monday at noon for seven weeks in advance.
One of the favorites from U.P. (Our after hours 8 course dessert tasting) has been this dish: First Heartbreak. A hot and cold take on a Baked Alaska with our version of "Rocky Road" ice cream made with bergamot, cocoa nibs, and marshmallow -- served over a moist chocolate pain de genes with butter almond chocolate ganache and meringue petals set aflame. One of my favorite stories is when one guest said hers would light on fire because she married her first boyfriend. Our "First Kiss" dish on the U.P. menu is served in beautiful bowls by @foodjetaime - one that is a smooth ladies' cheeks, and a stubbly one to represent men's cheeks, depending on who you're kissing. There's a mint panna cotta surprise at the end (because every first kiss should be a French one!). And to match, a buttered popcorn rum and coke, a throwback to your teenage days of making out in a movie theatre. ? #upfirst
