Fans of the crazy-talented Broadway vet Sutton Foster (and if you’ve seen her once, you’re a fan) have been taking to the streets with the news that she’s slated to star in a revival of the 1966 musical Sweet Charity. This jazzy rom-com has a book by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman and very clever lyrics by Dorothy Fields. Coinciding with the show’s 50th anniversary, this production stars two-time Tony winner Foster (TV’s Younger, and Broadway’s Violet and Anything Goes) as Charity Hope Valentine, the sassy, diehard romantic dancehall hostess whose naiveté and overeager embrace of every man she meets keeps getting her in hot water.

Performed in an intimate setting with original choreography by Joshua Bergasse (On the Town), this production will be given a fresh, modern perspective by director Leigh Silverman. We can't wait to see what this creative team cooks up. The last major revival of Sweet Charity was back in 2005, starring Christina Applegate (who famously broke a foot during out-of-town tryouts), and it was a very troubled affair.

The New Group is producing this Off Broadway outing and who knows? If it’s a hit, it may move uptown. Preview dates have not been set but performances begin in November at the Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre, in the Pershing Square Signature Center. More information and details here.
