1. Celebrate the U.S. Women's Soccer Team
For the first time in 55 years, New York City is throwing a ticker-tape parade for women. Following the USA's World Cup victory, the women's team will be showered with confetti, applause and love as they make their way up the Canyon of Heroes. Don't miss out on the fun (it's worth sneaking out for a long lunch). (Broadway between Battery Park and City Hall, 11am, free)

2. Get a kick out of the Brooklyn Museum's new "Sneaker Culture" exhibit
"The Rise of Sneaker Culture", which opens at the Brooklyn Museum today, takes a look at how the shoes have evolved through history, from their genesis to their current status as an essential fashion symbol. The show has nearly 170 styles, including adidas signed by Run-DMC, original Air Jordans and collaborations with high-end designers like Prada and Louboutin. (Brooklyn Museum, Wed–Sun through Oct 4, $16)

3. Watch Touch of the Light at the South Street Seaport
The Seaport Film & Food Festival brings free outdoor screenings of foreign movies, as well as complimentary snacks, to the Seaport every Friday for the next four weeks. Taiwanese film Touch of the Light will kick the series off tonight. (South Street Seaport, 7pm, free)
