The three best things to do in New York today

1. Watch a screening of Torture Dungeon at Nitehawk
Director Andy Milligan was the go-to director for countless super-low budget films that filled the theaters of Times Square in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Feel like an extra in Taxi Driver as you take in this fun, over-the-top medieval romp filmed entirely in the woods of Staten Island. There will also be music by DJ Bones, plus prizes and other surprises. (Nitehawk Cinema, 136 Metropolitan Avenue, 9:30pm. $15)

2. See actors recreate The Lion King entirely from memory
Eight actors from Ten Bones Theater will be thrust onstage, cast as Simba, Nala and the rest of the gang, and then forced to perform the show from memory. To make matters complicated, the improv masters must incorporate lines written by the audience and sounds played by the event's host into their production. Disney diehards, try not to get offended. (The Pit, 123 E 24th St, 9:30pm. $10)

3. Check out Jenny Holzer projections at the New York Botanical Garden
A contemporary art superstar intersects with an art history icon as part of the NYBG’s Frida al Fresco evenings. To coincide with the garden's Frida Kahlo exhibition, Jenny Holzer has mounted an outdoor light projection piece displaying selections from Frida Kahlo's diary entries, writings of Octavio Paz and verses from some of Mexico’s leading contemporary female poets. Each attendee gets one complimentary cocktail. (New York Botanical Garden, 2900 Southern Blvd, Bronx, 6:30-9:30pm. $35)
