Commissioned to celebrate Bach's 250th birthday and premiering in 2000, Osvaldo Golijov's La Pasión según San Marcos has emerged as one of the banner works of the 21st century: an example of cultural and stylistic permeability, and a symbol of mutual respect and cooperation in pursuit of high ideals. Both aspects make the piece a superb pedagogical vehicle; here New York high-school musicians team up to perform it with conductor Robert Spano, vocal soloists, Orquesta La Pasión and members of the Schola Cantorum de Venezuela.
