Two different programs, both slightly strange yet compelling, are the highlights of the Philharmonic's week. On Jan 22 (and 23 and 24), guest conductor Long Yu leads the orchestra through a program of Russian opposites, in which Tchaikovsky's pleasant Violin Concerto is presented alongside Shostakovich's brooding and brusque Fifth Symphony. A new set list comes with a new cast of stars, starting on Wed 28, when pianist Emanuel Ax helps the Phil perform Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 (in a program that repeats on Jan 29, 30 and 31). As you might expect, given the presence of guest conductor David Robertson, these gigs aren't all about Chopin. Also included are two tasty 20th-century orchestral essays: Stravinsky's The Song of the Nightingale and Bartók's The Miraculous Mandarin suite. Those with the morning of Jan 28 to themselves should consider the $20 open rehearsal.
