OnSaturday, January 19, Roots Events is presenting what looks to be a great night for lovers of top-tier house and techno: a night with Scotland’s venerable Soma label, with Glasgow’s Slam and Hipp-E & Halo, together known as H-Foundation, playing the tunes. Catching Slam will be a treat, since as far as we can recollect (which admittedly isn’t all that far), the duo’s Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle haven’t doled out their driving tech-house rhythms here in NYC since the Centro-Fly days. But we’re equally psyched to catch H-Foundation, who, in the pair’s early-’00s heyday, perfected a kind of throbbing, tribal-tinged dub-house that managed to convey both a sense of otherworldliness with one of dance-floor abandon. H-Foundation went silent after releasing 2003’s Environment album on Soma—but now, Hipp-E and Halo are back on the scene and ready to rock. Judging from this mix, it’s like they never left.
Slam + H-Foundation is on Saturday, Jan 19.
