Sifting through our mountains of promo tunes a few months back, a certain tune caught our ear—it was a perfectly stripped-down remix of Roberto Rodriguez’s old-schoolish house tune, “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching.” Reading the fine print, we saw the mix was courtesy of the Black Madonna. Of course it was: The Chicago DJ-producer, a resident at that city’s Smart Bar, has been behind a bunch of great tunes (both remixes and original productions) over the past few years, for cool labels like Home Taping is Killing Music, Stripped & Chewed, Classic (she’s a fave of label boss Derrick Carter) and File Under Disco. She’s a bit unknown here in NYC—but the Discovery team is astutely bringing her to Glasslands on Saturday, August 10, where she’ll be spinning alongside Detroit’s Secrets and Discover residents Faso and Free Magic. And here’s a treat—an exclusive mix from the Black Madonna herself, heavy on the electronic disco and featuring a fab track by Daddy Dewdrop, the same guy who made 1971’s "Chick-A-Boom (Don't Ya Jes' Love It)”!
Discovery: The Black Madonna + Secrets is at Glasslands Gallery Saturday, August 10.
