Time Out says
Daft Punk released a snappy little disco number earlier this year called “Get Lucky”; maybe you’ve heard it? We can’t speak for the rest of the world, but frequenters of Brooklyn’s dance venues certainly weren’t surprised—they’ve known full well that disco didn’t die on a baseball diamond in 1979.
Tipping the scales at nine members, Brooklyn outfit Midnight Magic certainly makes the floorboards creak, although that’s at least partially due to the onstage antics of electrifying frontwoman Tiffany Roth. Her arresting stage presence and powerful voice call to mind iconic artists the likes of Chaka Khan and Grace Jones. Add a tight-knit group of extraordinary musicians, comprising bass guitar, keyboards, percussion and a horn section, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a show.
Formed in 2009, Midnight Magic soon garnered international acclaim with its breakout single, “Beam Me Up,” and has since toured alongside Cut Copy, Washed Out and, most recently, Holy Ghost! The group’s studio houses an impressive array of analog synthesizers, utilized to infuse its music with elements of funk, house, electro and freestyle. It makes for a dynamic sound that’s all but guaranteed to set bodies in motion. Veteran NYC DJ Justin Strauss (Whatever/Whatever) is also on the Cameo bill, so don’t expect this party to let up.—Kristen Zwicker
