John & Matt have created a really fantastic show. They have a great rapport and their banter throughout the show is hilarious; their hosting is reason enough to check it out. But they also bring in impressive, high caliber, guest performers and you get to see some pretty great/weird film clips too. If that weren’t enough, there are drink specials and the venue is awesome. Definitely worth checking out.
John Murray and Matt Fisher are two funny engaging hosts. They host with the casualness of friends hanging out and talking about movies. And all of those friends just happen to be great stand-ups and performers from around the city. John and Matt's movie nerdiness is delightful to watch in action, and it sets an effortlessly relaxed tone to the show.
Great guests, amazingly bad (bad in a good way) films, and two very funny, very engaging, hosts. Wish Low Standards with John and Matt was hosted more than once a month.
I've checked out a couple shows and it's always a good time. John and Matt are really funny and silly hosts. It's a pretty low key and friendly atmosphere which I love. Plus the bar itself is cozy and they offer craft beers so its a nice way to spend an evening and discover weird movies to add to your bucket list!
Low Standards with John and Matt was fantastic! They are great hosts that really connect to the audience and touch on topics that are relatable to everyone in the audience. Both John and Matt are know so much about all different genres of movies and even when they don't know one, they still are able to make funny jokes about it! Their guests are diverse and hilarious. Each performer is so real and honest which is always a plus! Hearing what the hosts and guests have to say about their favorite bad movies is non-stop fun!!! Can't wait until next month's show!!!
The special thing about this show is the status/quality of the performers involved, juxtaposed with the super-casual, intimate setting. I'm a repeat attendee and every time I go, I'm blown away by the talent John and Matt attract to the show just by being their charming selves. The concept of sharing a favorite bad movie with an audience is fun and simple and it creates camaraderie in the audience by the end of the show. I plan to return and am already dreading the (inevitable) day when this show gets too big for the space!
I've been a couple of times and I've always really enjoyed myself. This show has everything -- stand up, character bits, film analysis, and fantastic hosts. John and Matt have a lot of fun doing this show and it rubs off on the audience. It's a great atmosphere and it's a good balance of comedy, movies, and just pure fun. They get a lot of good talent too -- I've seen Sasheer Zamata (SNL), Jena Friedman (Daily Show), and Chris Gethard (TCGS). . . just to name a few. Also, videology is a great gem, I lived in Williamsburg for a year before I stepped foot inside and it's really awesome. Great beer, awesome popcorn (seriously the popcorn is so fresh), and a great all around environment. In brief: GO and pregame with Pies-n-thighs
I am new to not only Brooklyn, but also the improv comedy scene and Low Standards was a great show to get my feet wet. John and Matt are two extremely talented and very funny guys who keep the crowd laughing throughout the entire show. What I was most impressed by was how they are able to keep the audience guessing and wondering what they have up their sleeve next. I never felt like they didnt have direction for their next joke or scene. All in all, this is a very funny show and I highly recommend it to anyone in the area or anyone looking for a fun improv group to check out.
I rarely recommend comedy shows to friends because many can be hit or miss, but this show is just the best every time I've seen it. Matt and John are as charming as their taste in movies is awful and the guests that they bring on have never disappointed. Oh, and it costs NO MONEY! like zero dollars and no cents, plus if you come at the happy hour, they charge you less money for things! Its a great place to bring a date or reconnect with a childhood friend while watching a comedian try to defend a movie where an 11 year old suburban ninja dunks from the free throw line to win back his girl's bike (While watching this clip I spit beer on a stranger at the next table because I was laughing so hard. He didn't care. That's how much fun it was)
A really amazing show. Some really funny comedians, and great movies. The hosts John and Matt are excellent performers, and its worth it just to hear them talk about movies. If you are a fan of comedy and underrated movies this is the perfect show for you. I got to see my favorite comedian do stand up and then learned about a cool movie I had never heard of. A lot of fun.
You won't need any lousy drink-minimums or shady ticket dealers to see this amazing comedy show. Low Standards is always free with an awesome craft beer bar up front, which usually has happy hour specials when you show up early. You are definitely going to want to show up early for this show because it is consistently awesome. Stand-ups do some short sets and then riff with the lovable John Murray and the adorable Matt Fisher about the terrible, amazing, and amazingly terrible movies that they love. Don't let the Brooklyn commute intimidate you either, this show is only one stop away from Manhattan and well worth it!
I LOVE that this show is in my neighborhood every month! I've been going since the first show and it just keeps getting better and better and more and more hilarious. I always bring friends and everyone always has a blast. One of the comics we saw a few months back is the newest SNL member! This is the real deal when it comes to comedy and John Murray and Matt Fisher are comedy gods who will not fail you! Go, go, GO see this FREE show before it's not as easy to get a seat because now that word's getting out, this thing is gonna blow up -I'm sure of it.
What a great show!! I have seen the hosts perform at UCB doing improv before and they're always super funny. This show however, is its own thing. Comedians are chosen by comedians so you know its good. You never know who you'll see! I brought a first date to see this show and she LOVED it. It made me seem like a super cool guy which I am not.
Such a cool format. Stand-ups do ten-minute sets then sit down with the hosts John and Matt to talk about their favorite movies and watch some clips. I've seen some really incredible comedians here: Chris Gethard, Judah Friedlander, Sasheer Zamata. And the venue is amazing. It's a video store but also a bar!
The show really pulls you in - its that right level of engaging and entertaining. The guests are well chosen and diverse. Be ready to enjoy some stand-up style comedy and unique perspectives on film and more as presented by their guest funny-people. Plus, you'll most certainly end the night with a couple new movies to add to your queue.
This show is hilarious! Bad movies in the best possible way and crazy good comics. How do we rally for bi-monthly shows?
I really love coming to this show. The hosts, Matt Fisher and John Murray are very affable and extremely knowledgeable about movies, and are happy to talk with the audience about them. I really enjoy seeing the great comics, but the best part of the night is when the hosts and the comics discuss clips they've brought from their favorite bad movies. It's just fun to hear the comics and the hosts desperately trying to make sense of the nonsense clips they're watching. If you love comedy and movies, good or bad, this is a great show for you.
I thought you had to go to Manhattan for great comedy- not true! As a Queens boy (Forest Hills), going to Williamsburg is not my first choice (traffic, coffee carts etc) but I will be at every Low Standards show from now on...such great comics, hilarious movie clips and a really fun vibe. John and Matt are great hosts, they engage with the audience, they dress well too. Go see this show! I'll be there!
This is a show I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. It's so much fun-- John and Matt are mad charming and funny, and their guests are always amazing! The stand up is great, the bar is great, and the movies are bad. But good-bad. I've been introduced to some super great bad movies thanks to this. I look forward to the show every month. Definitely attend if you can!
I look forward to this show every month! This show is hands-down the best kept secret in Brooklyn!!! SO GREAT!
