In conjuction with the exhibit "James Lee Byars: 1/2 an Autobiography," the Department of Media and Performance Art and MoMA PS1 re-create many of Byars's most influential performances. The artist—whose relationship with MoMA reportedly began after he hitchhiked from Detroit to obtain Mark Rothko's contact information—created a body of work that paradoxically sought both perfection and ephemerality. The live events include Byars's The Mile-Long Paper Walk, performed by Lucinda Childs Dance Company member Katie Dorn (Aug 17) and Berlin-based artist and dancer Jimmy Robert (Sun 7).
