The first iteration of this classic behind-the-scenes weepie, starring Fredric March and Janet Gaynor, features plenty of stinging dialogue (Dorothy Parker was one of the writers) in lieu of the musical numbers that enliven the 1954 Judy Garland–James Mason remake.
