Gallo’s far-superior debut stars the director as a peevish ex-con who kidnaps a dance student (Christina Ricci) and forces her to pose as his wife for his alienated parents. Visually astounding and emotionally harrowing, it’s the kind of movie that gives narcissism a good name.
