This exhaustive, exacting account of a bus hijacking in Rio de Janeiro owes much of its startling immediacy to the ineptitude of the city’s police force, which somehow neglected to establish a perimeter around the crime scene. TV journalists were able to stand right beside the vehicle for the entire five-hour standoff. Padilha does a fine job of investigating the uncomfortable degree to which the presence of cameras influenced events.
