When Spielberg's film sticks to the cross-country cat-and-mouse routine between the cheerfully larcenous Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) and FBI honcho Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks), it qualifies as both hoot and holler. Alas, somebody apparently decided that this story needed more “heart”—resulting in stabs at pathos which only bog the film down. Baye plays Abagnale's mostly absent mother.
