Paranoid romantic obsession gets a vein-popping workout in this, Buñuel’s signature film from his gun-for-hire period. An intense aristocrat suspects his dutiful young wife of infidelity, despite all evidence to the contrary. Note the scene in which he takes her to the top of a church’s bell tower and contemplates strangling her and tossing her off—a big influence on a certain Master of Suspense.
