There’s a numbing familiarity as Koltai’s Holocaust film unfolds, and most viewers will gird themselves for the usual danse macabre. But when the movie lands upon a formal strategy of periodic blackouts, each one punctuated by an indignity suffered by the 14-year-old hero, it effectively restores the horror.
