The story is simple—a rich boy compromises an innocent girl’s virtue, then tells her to take a hike—but per usual, De Oliveira throws in a number of tricks (talking to the audience, blatant artificiality) that make things far more complex and meta. We'd put this up against the Portuguese master's better-known works any day of the week.
