Less ostentatiously flashy than Wong’s prior work, this depressing gay breakup movie shares those films’ sense of cinema as possibility. What’s missing is the powerful romantic yearning, which has been replaced by endless squabbling—the kind that, rather than engendering your sympathy, merely finds you waving your hand in a circular get-on-with-it gesture.
