The crowning achievement of Portuguese director De Oliveira’s career is certainly preoccupied with mortality, as it studies the diminishing powers of an actor (Michel Piccoli). Like its protagonist, the film is more concerned with gracefully shuffling off this mortal coil than simply going gently into the night.
