Living On Love Alone
A deceptively easeful movie, writer-director Isabelle Czajka’s engaging second feature follows the plight of Julie (played lustily by Anaïs Demoustier), an initially hopeful provincial arts graduate in the Parisian job market. The realities of working as an assistant at a prestigious PR agency or a sales trainee at a publishing company erode Julie's self-esteem, encourage adventurous sexual outlets and make her prey for the unorthodox and the risky, as personified by an enigmatic charmer (rising star Pio Marmaï). As Czajka’s freshly acted, sprightly directed, insightful but never heavy nor didactic movie follows its young lovers on the potentially dangerous road south, she makes a seductive transition from an ironic and delicately scornful Laurent Cantet-style examination of the world of work to a look at love and freedom that probes keenly at the heart of the conventional romantic escapist drama.
