An agreeable remake of John M. Stahl’s Irene Dunne–Robert Taylor vehicle, this weepie concerns a wastrel (Hudson) who reforms and becomes a surgeon in an attempt to restore the eyesight of a woman he blinded in a car wreck. Like most of Sirk’s films, it’s way over the top, but in an intriguingly restrained (and nonironic) way.
