A paralyzed young man (Noiam) works through various stages of sulk until his warmhearted nurse (Cherkam) gradually guides him back to the land of the living. Initially a modest, minutely observed dual portrait, this incantatory first feature from writer-director Anocha Suwichakornpong explodes into something more ambitious and strange, referencing Kubrick's 2001 while staying true to its own rhythm and scale. While the filmmaker's ideas about life, death and the cosmos can be blunt, her use of sound and image is refined, deploying everything from chirping crickets to slow-building shoegazer rock to exquisitely score the mundane.
