Time Out says

Paul Mazursky’s most autobiographical (and best) film centers on a would-be thespian who seeks the downtown bohemian life, much to the dismay of his overbearing mother (Shelley Winters). It’s a nice snapshot of the Village in the mid-1950s, back when struggling actors could still afford to live there.
