Play It as It Lays

This abstract adaptation of Joan Didion’s essential L.A. novel (she coauthored the screenplay with John Gregory Dunne) now seems unfairly neglected—especially for its catty, tragic performance by Anthony Perkins as a Hollywood producer and Tuesday Weld as an emotionally batty actor.
