That Face

The precocious Polly Stenham shows a sensitive ear for mother-child intimacies and an eagerness to probe sadism in her grim portrait of a London family shattered by addiction and selfishness. Martha (Laila Robins) is a monstrously narcissistic mother; the dysfunctional clan around her includes a departed ex-husband (Victor Slezak) and two troubled teens (Christopher Abbott and Cristin Milioti). Director Sarah Benson’s production is stylish and bracing.—David Cote
