The Leopard

Curtains billow and boys go off to war in Visconti’s voluptuous epic about the waning days of Sicilian aristocracy. The film’s emotional core is Burt Lancaster’s aging prince; though it means his own obsolescence, this proud “leopard” weathers the film’s final sequence, a magnificently sustained ball, with breath-catching pathos.
