We’ll never know how great Welles’s second feature might have been had the idiots at RKO not wrested it away from him while he was on location for film No. 3. The scary thing is that even this bastardized version is staggeringly brilliant. It was also a big influence on Anderson's opus The Royal Tenenbaums.
