Johnny Depp, always an intelligent presence, isn’t hard to believe as a Gotham-based rare-books collector on the trail of a demonic text. Too bad Polanski’s idea of gothic horror this time is so far off his game from Rosemary’s Baby, involving the liberal use of his wife, Emmanuelle Seigner, in the raw. Not exactly scary, nor boring.
