Two Drifters

Two ghosts do indeed drift throughout João Pedro Rodrigues’s stunning new movie, both exerting a powerful hold on the topsy-turvy narrative. The first is “Pedro,” the expired object of desire that haunts the film’s love-crazy characters. The second is that of Douglas Sirk, whose hyperventilating melodramas inform every frame of Rodrigues’s irony-soaked soap opera.
