Time hasn’t been kind to Carl Reiner’s comedy about a Portnoy-like schnook (George Segal at his schnookiest), his overbearing mom (Ruth Gordon) and a hodgepodge of stereotypically neurotic New Yorkers. Sure, sights like Gordon biting a grown man in the ass never go out of style, but the film’s “shocking” moments now feel both gratuitous and musty.
