Time Out says

Learn how New Yorkers survived without Whole Foods and Trader Joe's at this lecture on 19th-century markets. Columbia assistantprofessor of history and urban studies Gergely Baics will explain the ways in which access to fresh food changed as New York expanded from a colonial town into a sprawling metropolis. He'll also look at the social implications of those changes—for instance, how the ability to obtain items like good meat became linked to class and ethnicity. The talk starts at 7pm, but make sure you arrive by 6:30pm for a reception, where you can sample oyster pan roast, rutabaga pudding and other period snacks.
