Time Out says

4 out of 5 stars

When most NYC residents think of traveling to upstate New York, they generally have in mind trips in two directions: north to the Hudson Valley and on to the Adirondacks or west to Central New York and the Finger Lakes. If you look at a map of the state, however, that leaves out a pretty big chunk of the state northwest from the city. (Like, a really big chunk.) If this sounds familiar, heed these words: those overlooking this area do so to their own detriment! A six hour drive in that direction will get you to the heart of the 1000 Islands region, one of the most beautiful parts of the country, let alone the state.

Smack dab in the middle of this stunning area is the 1000 Island Harbor Hotel. This hotel is the perfect homebase for exploring this watery, island-strewn boundary land between New York and Canada. The reasons for this are many, but one of the most notable ones is that you can see many of the aforementioned islands from a large share of the comfortable rooms at the waterfront resort. The hotel’s location is an incredible asset. Also, if you’re heading to the 1000 Islands, you’re going to want to stay in the town of Clayton. (Cape Vincent is a bit too sleepy and Alexandria Bay is slightly more rundown.) And if you're staying in the town of Clayton, you’re going to want to stay at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel.

Located on the shores of the St. Lawrence River, this refined, 105-room resort is surrounded by great things to do. Clayton’s downtown is just across the street and a scenic river walk goes right by the hotel’s lawn. Between the hotel and the river, you’ll find a massive patio with firepits, plenty of seating for taking in the view and outdoor dining. (A heated pool and jacuzzi can be found inside.) If you can, it’s worth springing for one of the guest rooms or suites with panoramic river views—there’s a good chance you’ll see a massive freighter float by while you’re lying in bed. (A rare experience!)

Not surprisingly, the vibes at the hotel are heavy on the maritime influences. If you’re walking down a hallway without windows, you could very easily imagine you’re wandering down a hallway on an upscale cruise ship. The on-site dining options are centered on the Seaway Grille, a restaurant with roomy and comfortable seating both inside and outside. Don’t miss the Caesar Salad with crisp romaine or the indulgent Farfalle Gorgonzola Chicken with chicken, mushrooms and roasted red peppers tossed in a delicious cream sauce. In the morning, guests can enjoy extensive breakfast offerings on the expansive outdoor patio which is (literally) steps away from the water and, at night, be sure to take advantage of the 1000 Islands Bar, a ritzy indoor cocktail spot that exudes vibes of a relaxed yacht club.

Speaking of yacht clubs, a stay at this resort almost demands a trip out on the water, so be sure to speak to the concierge while you’re here for some exciting ideas. Excursions at the nearby Antique Boat Museum, Clayton Island Tours and Uncle Sam Boat Tours are an absolute must. And after your adventure, you’ll have a perfect homebase to return to.
