Full disclosure, as a platinum guest for SPG you often get upgraded, and I was very lucky when they upgraded me to a suite from my basic room, which was rather small, but usual in New York City. The suite was excellent with ample space and great quality touches, furniture and appliances. Views of NYC rooftops were a plus. Perfect room. The best thing for me at Starwood properties is their "heavenly bed". I'm so used to it that I keep looking for it wherever I go, and it is the most comfortable type bed I have tried in a hotel chain worldwide. I want one for my home! The rest of the W is as expected, good space, and specially the bar and bar Staff at reception who were superb.
My only critique is about their breakfast room. I went down for breakfast, which was included, but they told me that I needed a reservation to sit down at the hotel restaurant (?!) or they could "put something in a bag for me to take away". I have traveled the world and this was the first time I encountered this, not being able to use the breakfast room without pre-reserving it. I did complain to the front Staff who were puzzled by it, but I did not use the restaurant for the remaining of my stay. This is the only reason why I don't give 5 stars to this great hotel.
