You don't need a plane ticket to get a taste of Greece this weekend. Head to Astoria's Museum of the Moving Image, where the Hellenic Film Society is celebrating legendary Greek-Cypriot director Michael Cacoyannis with a four-film retrospective from October 16 through 18. Best known for the Oscar-winning Zorba the Greek, Cacoyannis was a major force in bringing Greek cinema to the world, and this is a rare chance to catch some of his classics on the big screen.
The festivities kick off Friday with A Girl in Black (1956), a drama set on the gorgeous island of Hydra. On Saturday, catch Anthony Quinn in the iconic Zorba the Greek (1964), before Sunday's double feature of Stella (1955), starring Melina Mercouri, and the romantic comedy Windfall in Athens (1954). All four films will screen with English subtitles, so don't worry if your Greek is a little rusty (or nonexistent). Find tickets and screening times on the Hellenic Film Society's website.
