Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya

It's been a half-century since Duke Ellington arranged a recording session for a young South African pianist named Dollar Brand, and sent him on his way to international stardom. In the intervening decades, the pianist, later to be known as Abdullah Ibrahim, has explored everything from bluesy readings of standards to grandly ambitious orchestral works. Here, the 80-year-old leads a septet as part of a rare club run.
