With its metamorphic rhythms and exotic scales, gamelan has been an inspiration to Western composers since Debussy first heard it at the Universal Expedition in 1889. Tonight, accomplished young pianists Manon Hutton-DeWys and Melinda Faylor, both of whom studied gamelan in Indonesia, play works by Colin McPhee, Ravel, Claude Vivier, Ligeti, Faylor and Lou Harrison that are inspired by the genre. They are joined by members of Gamelan Dharma Swara, dancer Loren Groenendaal and violinist Arthur Moeller.
