Philadelphia quintet Bardo Pond predates any second-wave psych-trendiness by years, so it’s no surprise that these magi stroll unfettered through the veil (possibly several times a day). Bardo Pond is loud, too—loud like few other bands (a narcotized My Bloody Valentine is not a casual comparison)—and the group’s music is an eruption of darkly luminous noise. Also appearing is Virginia’s Pontiak, which can suggest Dinosaur Jr. recast as a stoner-metal band, with quavering plaints and raggedly pretty guitar noodling layered over weighty riffage.
