The self-titled Engine Studios CD by Baltimore's Whoarfrost is hands-down one of the most intense albums we've heard this year. It lays free-jazz energy over a post-hardcore template—as though a Dischord Records outfit like Void or Hoover were being forcibly sucked through an ESP-Disk wormhole. Here the band shares a bill with the noisy punk-jazzers of Controlled Bleeding, active since the late ’70s.
