Even before the Met's new production of Mussorgsky's brooding masterpiece got underway, it encountered trouble in the form of a defecting director, Peter Stein. The capable and imaginative Stephen Wadsworth has taken up the reins, but the real lure remain the estimable young German bass René Pape in the title role. The Russian conductor Pavel Smelkov takes over for Valery Gergiev for this final performance of the season.
