Despite its mysterious name, the Thirteenth Assembly (appearing at 8pm tonight) represents the union of two well-known local avant-jazz duos: cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and drummer Tomas Fujiwara, and guitarist Mary Halvorson and violist Jessica Pavone. The band traverses the wide aesthetic expanse one might expect from these four players, touching on thorny improv, foreboding art rock and spare chamber music. Up at 10pm is trombonist Brian Drye's Bizingas, a quartet that winningly fuses crisp groove and poignant melody.
