Already a sensation in his native Australia and throughout much of Europe, singer and guitarist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu—known simply as Gurrumul—celebrates the U.S. release of his self-titled debut album on the Dramatico label. An indigenous Australian, Gurrumul was born blind; left-handed, he plays a conventional guitar strung backward. He chiefly sings in clan dialects, but the sweetly thrilling sound of his voice has helped this former member of popular Australian aboriginal band Yothu Yindi connect with listeners worldwide—Björk, Elton John and Sting are fans—and earned him an impressive array of Australian awards and accolades.
