New Orleans rapper Curren$y’s output might be misfiled as stoner rap—ten seconds spent with his Twitter account reveals a workmanlike devotion to getting high—but there’s nothing sluggish about his flow. He’s a verbose, funny, hyperaware rapper, giving shout-outs to everything from Family Matters to perennially hot Tribeca eatery Bubby’s. On last year’s excellent Pilot Talk and its sequel, Pilot Talk II, Curren$y rapped over psych-rock–drenched ambience. On top of that pairing, he issued a solid mixtape, Covert Coup, in April. The bar is set high for his forthcoming LP, Weekend at Burnie’s, due June 28.
