All rappers traffic in references; Das Racist rush-hours in them, peppering its songs with obscure, popular and hilarious nods. Perhaps in an effort to finally extinguish the flames of the joke-rap brand bestowed by its viral hit “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell,” the Brooklyn trio’s new Relax is a darker, edgier move. And though this scattershot debut lacks the gleeful fervor of the cohesive, ebullient mixtapes—something of a Lil Wayne syndrome these days—the Das Racist live show is still as rambunctious as ever, more house party than concert.
