In 1979, the Alvin brothers—the straight-shooting lead vocals belong to Phil and the blistering guitar solos are Dave’s—started the Blasters, a rockabilly band that would tour with Queen and lend a track to the ’96 Robert Rodriguez–Quentin Tarantino flick, From Dusk Till Dawn. Last year's Common Ground: Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin Play and Sing the Songs of Big Bill Broonzy marked a fresh start: Dave quit the Blasters in 1986, and Common Ground was the first studio venture from the siblings since 1985’s Hard Line. You can bet on blasts of both elation and fierceness this week, as the Alvins return to NYC.
