David Weiss Sextet

Trumpet ace David Weiss has spearheaded a number of excellent projects in recent years, including intergenerational all-star team the Cookers and his own Point of Departure crew. Weiss's new disc, When Words Fail, doesn't feature a snappily named band, but fortunately, that's no indicator of musical blandess: Like the three Cookers discs before it, this is a gorgeously arranged set of composerly hardbop, executed with exemplary passion and drive. Here, Weiss, celebrates the release with help from saxists Myron Walden and Jimmy Greene, pianist David Bryant, bassist Linda Oh and drummer E.J. Strickland.
