Detroit funk guitarist Dennis Coffey ("Scorpio") has achieved renewed prominence in recent years, thanks to his discovery by a new generation of classic R&B fans—and the just-released Dennis Coffey (Strut) ranks with his best work, combining raw-grooved new instrumentals with spirited reworkings of vintage R&B nuggets from his session days. The 70-year-old axman holds his own amid a passel of guest vocalists, including Mick Collins of Detroit garage kings the Dirtbombs, who’ll share the bill. Coffey will be backed by Detroit neofunk combo Will Sessions and singer Kendra Morris.
