Heaviness has always been the stock-in-trade of this New York threesome; not content to simply trot out boilerplate reggae jams (an itch they scratch as Matisyahu’s backing band), these three wise men intertwine dropped-D metal riffing and bowel-rumbling dub tracks for maximum sonic immensity. When the elements sync upthe effect is blissfully colossal. At its worst, it indulges in the sort of math-rock overplaying that’s synonymous with a Berklee diploma. If the because-we-can virtuosity occasionally grates on IV, Dub Trio’s latest collection of riddims ’n’ riffs on ROIR, tonight's show should be another story. Live, the group balances its showing off with a Kong-sized amount of sound and fury.
