Eivind Opsvik's Overseas + Tony Malaby's Novela

Despite their instrumental-jazz milieu, Norwegian bassist Eivind Opsvik's compositions come across as true songs. Warm, subtle and dreamlike, many of the pieces performed by Opsvik's working band, Overseas, could accommodate a soul or pop vocal with room to spare. Opsvik also performs in tonight's early set by Novela, a rangy, large ensemble run by saxophonist Tony Malaby with pianist and coconspirator Kris Davis.
