More than a stellar vibraphonist, Gary Burton is a seasoned pedagogue with a nose for fine guitarists—Larry Coryell and Pat Metheny have both done time in Burton's bands. The leader's latest find, Julian Lage, first came to prominence as a preteen prodigy, but lately has come into his own as one of the most satisfying players on the scene; bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez complete the lineup, and each night of this 70th-birthday run includes a prominent special guest (Arturo Sandoval Sept 17 and 18; Terence Blanchard Sept 19 and 20; Coryell Sept 21 and 22).
